Chipotle was owned by its founder for 10 years or so when he sold a majority interest to McDonalds. A couple of years after that, in January 2006, McD spun Chipotle out as a Publicly Held Company. The stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol CMG. But McD still owned a majority of the stock.
A few months after that McD announced it would divest of all of its ownership in Chipotle (see Puck's link). It completed this transaction on October 12, 2006.
So, now Chipotle is owned by the people. For about $60 you can own a share yourself.

It was owned by McDonalds. I just read online that it was sold in the last business quarter but I have yet to figure out to who....
I know this because it is my fave place to eat and I was interested in franchising one but they don't franchise.....
