x+y=8 or y=8-x
7.25x + 5.50y=52.75 now substitute 8-x for "y":
7.25x + 5.50(8-x)=52.75
7.25x + 44 -5.50x=52.75
1.75x=8.75
check:

36.25+16.5=52.75
52.75=52.75 so it works

7.25 a + 5.50 k = 52.75
