x=adult tickets
y=kids tickets
x+y=8 or y=8-x

7.25x + 5.50y=52.75 now substitute 8-x for "y":
7.25x + 5.50(8-x)=52.75
7.25x + 44 -5.50x=52.75
1.75x=8.75

check:
(7.25)5 + (5.50)3=52.75
36.25+16.5=52.75
52.75=52.75 so it works

x=5

so 5 adult tickets and 3 kids tickets

a = number of adult tickets
k = number of kid tickets

a + k = 8
7.25 a + 5.50 k = 52.75

Multiply first equation by 7.25 to get ready to subtract equations.

7.25a + 7.25k = 8*7.25 = 58.00
7.25 a + 5.50 k = 52.75 Subtract second from first equation.
1.75k = 5.25
k = 3 kid tickets

Substitute a 3 in the first equation for the k.

a + 3 = 8
a = 5 adult tickets
