In Revenge of the Sith, when you see Anakin physically transformed into Darth Vader, you can see that he has burned very badly. Yet in Return of the Jedi when Luke takes off the mask, you don't see hardly any burn scars. How does that work? Or does he have the mask taken off periodically to have them treated?

He was still burned in ROTJ. In Episode 3, his face wasn't burned that bad. Some burn scars heal over time. But, it is just a movie and special effects are light years ahead of where they were at that time. He appeared more burned to give it a more dramatic effect.

Seventeen years of treatment plus you did not see the back of his head like you did in The Empire Strikes Back. In that movie you notice that it is all burned up on the back of his head. The Black suit is basically a dialysis maching and respirator combined.

His scarring remained, permanently and irreversible. However, at the time that the older movies were filmed (Eps 4,5,6), makeup effects were not used so profoundly as not to give any secrets of his origin away.

They probably healed it with some type of "future" device. His head does looked sort of scarred up in "Jedi".
