They should be somewhere where they're not directly exposed to sunlight, and preferably somewhere quiet. I don't see any need to cover the cage up, as long as they're not disturbed hamsters go to sleep fine. The hamster may also chew up whatever you use to cover its cage, if it is something like a cloth.

No, Keep the cover off...the hamster will feel afraid/scared. I have chinchillas and they hate it with a cover on the cage.

Yes, cover it when you want it to be quiet for a few hours during the day. It works for one of my friends.

i used to when i had hamsters, they dont like the sun/light when there sleeping...as long as theres enough of a gap for air to flow through.
