first, make them improper so they are easier to work with

3 1/2= 7/2

and 2 2/6 =14/6

now find a common denomiantor (its easier to write the numbers vertically but its hard to do that on yahoo answers)
since two can go in 6 and 2 (and six is already there so we dont need to worry about that one) im gonna change 7/2 to get a denominator of 6

so 2x3 is 6, but since i multiplied the bottom number i have to multiply the top
so, it is 21/6

21-14=7

so 7/6

:)

now, without any words:::

3 1/2-2 2/6

7/2 - 14/6

21/6-14/6

7/6

answer= 7/6

Ok, I'm not much of a teacher, but I will help.

First you need to convert the 1/2 and the 2/6 into the least common denominator (the bottom number has to be the same for both fractions). We cant use anything under 6 for this problem (remember, we only look at the bottom number of the two fractions). For this problem, 6 is our least common denominator because we can change 1/2 into a fraction with 6 on bottom).

1/2 = 3/6, to do this multiply the top number by what you have to multiply the bottom number to get 6......2 x 3 = 6, so 1 x 3 = 6. so 1/2 = 3/6

We could now rewrite the problem to say, 3 3/6 - 2 2/6. Easy right? Sounds confusing, but you'll get used to it.

Now we have to subtract. We have to take the "BIG" number in front of each fractions and put it back into it's fraction. We do this by multiplying the bottom number of the fraction by the "BIG" number and then adding the top number to that.

So, 3 3/6 = 21/6 (6x3=18 and 18+3=21)
for the second 2 2/6 = 14/6 (6x2=12 and 12+1=14).

So our problem is now 21/6 - 14/6. All you have to do is subtract the top number and leave the bottom number the same.
So, 21/6 - 14/6 = 7/6, which equals 1 1/6

I hope this helps. If I confused you, please get help from your teacher. Never be afraid to ask for help in class. You WILL actually use this stuff one day in the real world...I promise. lol

Basically you're just expressing your mixed fraction in terms of a fraction itself.

Convert to fractions then find common denominator and subtract.

(whole number*denominator + numerator)/denominator

For 3 1/2, 3*2 +1 = 7/2 (keep denominator).

For 2 2/6, 2*6 + 2 =14/6.

So common D is 6. Convert 7/2 to 21/6 since they're the same. Now it's 21/6-14/6 and you can figure out the rest.

first make sure denomanators are the same in this case 3 1/2 has a denominator of 2 and 2 2/6 has a denominator of 6 in order to mak them the same u need to multiply top and bottom of 1/2 by 3 to make the denominator same as 2/6 therefore u get 3/6 then u hav 3 3/6 - 2 2/6= then u subtract whole #'s 3-2 which equals 1 and then 3/6-2/6= 1/6 becareful the denominators do not subtract that is how u solve the problem

It's easiest to subtract improper fractions, and not mixed numbers. So, first step, convert to improper fractions. 3 and 1/3. YOu have 3 wholes. 3 times 2 is 6 halves, plus the 1 you already have is 7 halves, or 7/2. Now, 2 and 2/6. You have 2 wholes, times 6 is 12 sixths, plus the 2 you already have, giving you 14 sixths, or 14/6. Now, you must get the denominators even. 6 is the lowest common denominator, which is the easiest number to work with. You must multiply 7/2 by 3 to get 21/6, since 3 times 2, the denominator, is 6. It's all simple from here. 21/6 - 14/6. Just subtract 14 from 21, and leave it over 6. YOur answer is 7/6, or one and one sixth.

Put the numbers over a common denominator.

2 2/6 will be 14/6, 3 1/2 will be 3 3/6 or 21/6.

21/6 - 14/6 = 7/6, or 1 1/6

well see, you have to make a common denominator

3 3/6 - 2 2/6

then subtract the whole numbers and the fractions

3-2 = 1
3/6 - 2/6 = 1/6
then your answer is 1 1/6
yay for math

Dividing fractions may be somewhat troublesome. this is the in uncomplicated words operation that calls for using the reciprocal. using the reciprocal basically potential you change it over, or invert it. as an social gathering, the reciprocal of two/3 is 3/2. when we grant you with the rule of thumb, we are able to attempt to describe WHY you should apply the reciprocal interior the first position. yet for now... it really is the rule of thumb for branch... To divide fractions, convert the branch procedure to a multiplication procedure by potential of using top the following steps. replace the "÷" signal to "x" and invert the fraction to the right of the signal. Multiply the numerators. Multiply the denominators. Re-write your answer in its simplified or decreased type, if mandatory once you finished Step #a million for dividing fractions, the problem easily variations from branch to multiplication. a million/2 ÷ a million/3 = a million/2 x 3/a million a million/2 x 3/a million = 3/2 Simplified answer is a million a million/2 Now this is all there is to it. the important element you should maintain in ideas once you divide is to invert the fraction to the right of the branch signal, and regulate the signal to multiplication. The "divisor" (like a million/3 in our social gathering) has another interest that you may want to keep in ideas... particular Notes! be particular to in uncomplicated words invert the divisor. The divisor's numerator or denominator can not be "0". We might want to convert the operation to multiplication previously appearing an cancellations. I promised to attempt to describe why the rule of thumb calls for inverting the divisor.
