If you convert the fractions into equivalent fractions it would help. So, look for the least common denominator. In this case it would be six...since 6 is a multiple of 2. Multiply the 1/2 by 3/3 in order to get the equivalent fraction of 3/6. So, now you are left with an equation of 3 3/6 - 2 2/6. Now it is a simple matter of subtracting the whole numbers (3-2=1), and then subtracting the fractions. In order to subtract the fractions, since they now have common denominators, simply subtract the numerators (3-2=1) and keep the denominator the same (6). You are left with an answer of 1 1/6.

So, 3 1/2 - 2 2/6 = 1 1/6.

Hope this helps!

you have to convert the fraction into like terms which means you need to find the lowest common denominator. in this case it would be 6 because both 2 and six can go into six so then you muliply both the numerator and denominator in any fraction you change by the same number to convert it so 2 goes into six three times so multiply the one by three as well. so now you have 3 3/6 - 2 2/6. and this step is not nessessary in this case but it is in some it just makes it easier for me convert the whole number into fraction by multiplying the whole number by the denominator and adding it to the numerator so the first one you multiply 3 by six and get 18 plus the 3 is 21/6 and the next one 2 by 6 is twelve plus 2 is 14/6 then subract the numerators so 21/6 -14/6 is 7/6 and now you can simplify out the whole number which you do in early math classes usually so 6/6 = 1 so now you have 1 1/6 hope this helps

1) Find the Lowest Common Denominator...LCD = 6
(...to find LCD; Find the lowest multiple that both current denominator goes into evenly...)
convert 3 1/2 to equivalent mixed number with LCD of 6:
[2 goes into 6, 3 times, then multiply 3 into numerator 1, you'll get...]

3 1/2 = 3 3/6

equation:

3 3/6 - 2 2/6=

subtract numerators....(3-2)

subtract whole numbers...(3-2)

answer = 1 1/6
(already reduced to lowest term)

get a common denominator first. so in this case its 6. so what do u multiply the denominator "2" by to get 6? so multiply it by 3/3. 3 3/6 - 2 2/6, since 3 3/6 is the same as 3 1/2. get it? so the answer is 1 1/6.

Open your book to the chapter on LCD (least common denominator). Work in improper fractions.

3 1/2 = 7/2
We will work in units of 1/6; convert everything to that.
7/2 = 21/6 (multiply by 3/3)
21/6 - 14/6 = 7/6
Convert back to standard form 7/6 = 1+1/6

3 1/2 - 2 2/6
Put the fractions into common ones you can work with
3 6/12 - 2 4/12
do the math...
3-2= 1...
6/12 - 4/12 = 2/12...simplify....1/6
answer: 1 1/6
