If you don't have a firewall, someone can get in.
The Windows firewall isn't good enough.
Zone Alarm is a good one. The free version will slow down your system a bit and it may expire after a while, the pay version is faster and does more.

There are other good firewalls out there, some free, some not, shop around a bit and find one you like.
If you use a firewall, one is enough. If you use more than one at the same time they can get into conflict and cause serious problems.

Install the free ZoneAlarm. It has alerts and logs that will tell when somebody tries to get in.
