The best way to keep this from happening is to get a glass jar, no metals or fibrous objects. Metals can leach unwanted metals into your tank as they begin to rust and as with cloth or nylon, this can easily be sucked into the filter.

A baby food jar with the mouth end larger than the filter pole will hold the jar to the filter and the water to still be free flowing into it but will not allow the fish to be sucked into the filter. (especially if they are just swimming by.

I use a mason jar in one of my outside smaller ponds since the babies have a habit of getting sucked in. I also use this in one of my breeding tanks to keep the babies from getting sucked in.

Really works well and your fish remain safe

This happened to me as well when I had my Kuhli Loaches, they would swim up the sides of the tank and a couple of times right up the filter tube. My solution was to tie some meshing around the end of the tube, I used the same mesh that came with my bio balls or whatever, so it would stop the fish from getting through but would'nt block the food and poo from being sucked up.

You may have small fish and a powerful power filter. You may need to use a weaker filter. It could be that the fish is sick and weak and unable to swim against the current,so it gets sucked into the filter tube. Also make sure that the bottom of the tube has a strainer on.

YOU MUST PUT A PROTECTIVE STAINER OR LOWER DOWN THE SIPHON MECH. OF THE FILTER SYSTEM. USUALLY WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THE FISH IS ALMOST OUT THE DOOR.

you can tie a piece of panty hose over it or buy a sponge that covers it from the pet store.
