No death penalty. The government should not be killing its own citizens. Lock them up for life.

Absolutely not, on the basis of the facts.
Here are some of them, verifiable and sourced:

Re: cost
The death penalty costs far more than life in prison. The huge extra costs start to mount up even before the trial.

Re: Alternatives
48 states have life without parole on the books. It means what it says, is swift and sure and is rarely appealed. Being locked in a tiny cell for 23 hours a day, forever, is certainly no picnic.

Re: Possibility of executing an innocent person
Over 120 people on death rows have been released with evidence of their innocence. If we speed up the process we are bound to execute an innocent person.

Re: DNA
DNA is available in no more than 10% of murder cases. It is not a miracle cure for sentencing innocent people to death. It’s human nature to make mistakes.

Re: Deterrence
The death penalty isn’t a deterrent. Murder rates are actually higher in states with the death penalty than in states without it. (FBI stats.) Moreover, people who kill or commit other serious crimes do not think they will be caught (if they think at all.)

Re: Who gets the death penalty
The death penalty isn’t reserved for the “worst of the worst,” but rather for defendants with the worst lawyers. When is the last time a wealthy person was sentenced to death, let alone executed??

Re: Victims families
The death penalty is very hard on victims’ families. They must relive their ordeal in the courts and the media. Life without parole is sure, swift and rarely appealed. Some victims families who support the death penalty in principal prefer life without parole because of how the death penalty affects families like theirs.

Opposing the death penalty doesn’t mean you condone brutal crimes or excuse people who commit them. We should make up our minds using common sense based on solid facts, not revenge. According to a Gallup Poll, in 2006, 47% of all Americans prefer capital punishment while 48% prefer life without parole. Americans are learning the facts.

First off, easy Dawg, sorry you were molested at 7, but don't spent the rest of your life in prison for a scumbag. As to your question, which is asked often, the death penalty is a viable option, as is life in prison without parole. Charles Manson was sentenced to death, then it was commuted to life without, when the California Supreme Court ruled the Death penalty was unconstitutional. He should have fried!! Scott Peterson was sentenced to death, and he will be getting special privileges for the next 20 years on death row, through appeals. He should have been sentenced to life in prison without parole, so he would then have been placed with the general inmate population. By now, some other inmate would have done the execution for the State, had that been his sentence. Crazies, like Manson, yes, selfish brats like Peterson, no.

It depends on the crime. Child murderers, I approve of, as well as other horrid crimes. I also believe in forgiveness though. I don't think every one on death row deserves death. But look at Timothy McVay, he had his own death sentence brought forward. Not because he was suicidal, he just knew it was in his own best interest. I also believe that America is getting way to harsh in some areas such as criminal neglagence. If you do something completely stupid and it kills someone, that is one thing, but accidents do happen. It doesn't always mean neglagence. AND one of the stupidest things ever is the way the courts are taking minors and trying them as adults. That should be based on the childs mind frame, not the crime. In all good respect, I will accept these things because I am an American who loves his country. But I accept some of them like a pimple on the nose on prom night.

I approve of the death penalty because I think it is a far more merciful and compassionate sentence than life in prison making them live like animals and eventually become animals. However since the electroexecution and gas chamber methods can be botched, and firing squad can be cruel, I believe in one quick shot to the forehead with a powerful enough caliber and gun to come out the other side of the head and cause instant death. If it were me I would rather be shot than live a life sentence in there.

I support the death penalty because by virtue of their actions, some people deserve death. Individuals that murder children, kill multiple victims, rapists, diddlers and their ilk are an affront to society.
Arguments against the death penalty always fall into the logic of that our courts are flawed and will make mistakes or because they are human they deserve to live. The 1st one is wrong as we have to trust the legal system or else there is little point to it. Yes it makes mistakes but in the vast majority of cases it decides correctly. The 2nd point is the really foolish one, because as they are capable of reason and judgment as individuals this makes their crime even more heinous as they knew full well what they were doing.

Death penalty is a JOKE. It takes too long and costs the tax payers too much. Why do we have to use clean needles on people we are killing? If we are going to use the Death Penalty, then lets start getting ride of those on death row.

Yes to death.they need to put more murderers to death, why all the wait, ?why ?kill kill kill em all.and death to child molesters I was molested as a seven year old the dirty bastard,I have finally tracked him down four months ago, It took 5 thousand dollars to pay investigators to find him.& am planing a revenge run on him.If I murdered someone then I EXPECT and wish to be put to sleep. But like the fellow said above me ,they need to prove a persons guilt, only exicute those who had witnesses or dna evidence,I have been convicted 4 times of small things I DID NOT DO AT ALL,not even close, completly ennocent, they should PROVE the people guilty .I dont like the idea of we supporting those evil people who kill,.a few milion dollars we pay out on a giving some one life.NO WAY I SAY.

Disapprove. The legal system is too imperfect and kills innocent people.
How would YOU feel if it happened to you?
