The other night I was in extreme pain as I slept and writhed around in bed then heard a popping noise.

When I woke up in the morning I thought nothing about it, actually at the time I thought I had forgotten in. Then while In shower I leaned over for Shampoo and leg cramped up again and knee pop. I had thought wow, It was not a dream it happened.

now today my knee is sore. Will it just fix itself?

Wow! You're lucky!! I did this Dec. 9th while dancing and I couldn't even walk on it for 4 days!! I went to the ER right away and they did X-rays and said there was no damage to the bone, but I'd pulled all the ligaments and tendons around my knee. I went through physiotherapy and am still having probs with it. (though, I went back to work a week or 2 b4 I should have since I'm a hairstylist and it was Christmas rush.
Sounds like you've pulled the muscles around your knee as well...might be a little worse than that so I would get to the doc's asap. I haven't been to the doc's since 2 days after I did it so my bad. It might be better if I DID go back!
Be sure to elevate it above your heart to help reduce swelling.
Take Ibprophen for pain AND swelling
ICE it for 20 minutes every hour and that really helps.
Believe me!! If it feels stiff, then apply heat for 20 minutes after the ice to gain more movement.
Good luck!!!
