It is a scam and 99% of people who claim they are making money are lying. It is full of manipulation. Usually the product is over priced and not good enough to make it in the regular market so they get suckers to buy a ton of it to store in their garage or basement until they go bankrupt.

I make 5 figures a month on multi level marketing. It worked for me! Click my link and I'll show you how I did it:
Insert affiliate coded link here -- a link that will make me even more money! mu-ahahahaha
I'm not really into multi level marketing - for the single fact that it does not work. Period.
Usually all plans for MLM are based on fraudulent investments that promise payouts, but rarely deliver.
Normally, you have to buy into the group by paying a fee ($5 - $50,000 or more). At this point, people at the top are making money off of you. But you, having just joined, are not making a thing. And it continues to run this way.
Eventually, the base of users gets too thin and there is not enough money being generated by the group to deliver on the promised pay outs.
Then the MLM scam collapses, leaving most people at a financial loss.
If anyone tries to tell you differently, they're trying to sell you something.

Multi level marketing is basically adding increasingly more marketing people to your marketing efforts. But most of the times it is a geometrical increase and can not be sustained for long. As a result, most of the times the MLM effort stops and the last ones to join the business, suffer a monetary loss as well as they suffer the mental agony of feeling duped.
But if a person is confident of marketing the business to more people and subsequent conversion of people into his / her business associates, the person can earn phenomenal money. The person has to join the business at the earliest so as to reap the maximum possible benefits.
Ofcourse the business model is flawed but as a business it can not be treated as a scam. Normally all the information is given to the prospective business associates before they are inducted. But people rarely pay attention at the joining time and then after failure treat the whole thing as scam.

some answers are interesting.
Now if you want a pyramid that is legal try
Social Security.
most companies are multi level marketing though they will not admit it. see CocaCola, Ford, Pepsi , GM, McD etc.
should you approach the industry as such:
you as an independent distributor (franchiser) need to develop customers who buy products based on results not price (see WalarusMart).
these customers need knowledge and service to become consistent customers. when they become loyal clients (not price sensitive) you will have a solid real business. loyal clients openly give you referrals (new customers).
loyal clients ask for 'wholesale' (distributor) discounts which allows their products for free when servicing other customers. they also learn about the IRS tax breaks (up to 6K$ a yr) that W-2 people don't get.
just averaging 500$ extra take home a month will stop most divorces and bankruptcies. it can get most people out of debt slavery in 2 -4 yrs.
oh for those who don't believe the industry does not work, ask your self how many people go to college only to fail, quit, finish only to hate their field, have to go back for retooling in 5 yrs. your boss will always be your boss.
