Happened on the show? I didn't get to watch it because I forgot it was coming on, and ended up missing it. I did see the previews, but it just showed him coming in, and then Paula getting emotional. What happened?

The auditionee was Sherman Pore. His wife was in the hospital with cancer and he was looking for ways to boost her spirits up so they started a petition for him to be able to audition on American Idol. She was happy every time he came back with signatures. She passed away a couple of days before the auditions. He sang an old song called, "You Belong To Me".

he mentioned that his wife died two days before the audition. that they got people to sign a petition so he would be able to sing on american idol , since he is over the age limit

His wife had just died and it was his and her dream for him to sing on the show even though he was above the age limit. He got a petition signed that allowed him on the show though.
