"Lighting" has some good advice. When dealing with electrical fixtures switches, plugs etc. you should never assume that if the switch is off that there is no live power in the box under the fixture. There are two ways to wire a light / fan. One, bring the power to the switch first then to the light (there will be no power in the light box when the switch is OFF) and two bring the power to the light box first and then down to the switch (there will be power in the light box even if the switch is in the OFF position. The only way to make sure the power is safe is to turn of the circuit breaker (pull the fuse) for that part of the electrical system...then clean til your hearts content (don't soak it TOO much)...try soap and water...I used it once when I had a shower...It worked not too bad. Let it dry for a while like "lighting" said.

Don't worry about a shock if it is turned off. Use 409 or some other strong grease cutter and a sponge. If a little spray gets inside, just wait until it is dry before turning it on.

Hi there,
Go the the main metre box and either turn the power of to the whole house or just turn the power of on that circuit. Then give it a good clean. If you think you might of got water into it, leave it turn off for a few hours to dry out.

I use paper towels and a good degreasing liquid cleaner, first wipe down the blades with a towel soaked in the cleaner then wipe them off with another damp towel. I like the other guy's answer best about removing the fan blades, this method is really for the lazy man!

all these people gave good advice the only thing could would be sure there is no power to even if its off by flipping the breaker for that room. keep in mind so cleaners are flammable make sure it is dry before you restore the power to that area.

Turn the power off. And then use a slightly wet rag with a degreasing cleanser on it. And dry it off.

I just unscrew them and clean them with Simple Green or degreaser, don't dump them in the sink and wash them, they will swell up. There easier to clean when you take them off..........
