Well... there is definitly too much information to type to cover all your questions... so I'll make this simple.

The link that crazee has is a great start to learn how to play. Read it over, print it out, and bring it with you to the league. That way, you have something to reference. One thing that I suggest first timers and rookies to do is purchase a theme deck (typically found at a Walmart or Target) and get a feel for the game, gameplay, and how the deck is built. Purchase the deck and goto the League that you were planning on attending. I'm sure that there is someone there that will teach you the game hands on. Don't get discouraged if you lose a lot in the beginning... instead, watch how the opponent plays. Get a feel for the different decks. Watch some of the strategies that they use. If anything, ask about some strategies.

Start off slow and don't rush, the game becomes incredibly fun when you get the hang of it.

One other thing I would like to point out, after you get a feel for the cards and game, you can start trying your own strategies. www.pokebeach.com has scans of about 95% of the cards that are out there. Looks then over, see what you like, try and build a deck. Before you know it, you'll be a master in no time.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

PS... btw, here is a good picture of Pikachu. http://www.spetzomusic.com/images/pikachu%5B1%5D.jpg
