Small claims court is really usually a tiny office in a government building , such as a window where you poke your head in and ask for a form. You fill it and give it back. You will hear from them whether or not you have a case or not. Its as easy as that.
The fee for filing is nominal . As for energy, you have to go there, and fill up the form. Usually the money involved will be very little, such as a few hundred. I think the maximum money will be 25 thosand but it could be different from state to state, county to county. The best thing to do is to look for the one in your city or town, walk over there and ask personally.

call the small claims court where you want to file (usually, where the defendant lives is best). If you can't find that number, call the court clerk of the courthouse and ask for the number. Then ask them how to go about filing a complaint. They will probably have a form you can use, which simplifies things. Then go by the courthouse and pick up a form, fill it out and file it. There will probably be a small filing fee, so have some cash with you (though they may take credit cards), but no personal checks. You may also have to pay to have the defendant served. Anyway, ask about having the defendant served (by the sherrif) or whomever and make the arrangements for that. Then, you should get a courtdate in the mail. Usually, it is advised that people don't bring lawyers to small claims court. Don't- it's a waste of money. If the case was worth hiring a lawyer, you wouldn't be in small claims court. But, argue your case well, bring all documentation/evidence you need. Dress and speak sharp. Looking and acting like you respect the court will do wonders with the judge, especially if your opponent doesn't. Good luck.

each state makes it's own rules, usually 7.00-15.00. It isn't time consuming, just be ready with your case. you can find a number in your phone book to ask about cost in your area.
