My son's red eared slider (it's about 8 months old and tiny), has a very dry shell. We tried the lotion from Pet Smart, we are feeding him the baby pellets they recommend, the water is clean and filtered, and he has a basking lamp. Any ideas? The shell hasn't looked good for a few months...

it sounds like he needs a uvb light. its a florecent bulb that simulates the sun. alot of basking bulbs try and confuse you and say that they are full spectrum lights and provide uva rays. uvb bulbs need to be changed ever 6 to 8 months, they will still be giving off light but the uvb aspect wares off

When a turtle basks, the shell will naturally dry out and can look rather nasty- especially if it is in the process of shedding.

If the basic cares are rock solid- good temps, good lighting (including UVB lights), etc., then shedding is a really good sign of healthy growth!
