I am eighteen, and I want to get pregnant. The only problem is, I am bipolar, ADD, ADHD, OCD, and I have Tourette's, and I take medications such as Lithium, Strattera, and Risperdal. I know that there are some serious risks involved with that, I'm not daft, but this is something I really want to do. Advice??

Eighteen is awfully young to have a child, and since you have so many mental problems it might not be a good thing! I'd hate for you to forget to take your medication and have something happen to the child after it's born... the child has to come first, not just the thought that you want a baby.

I am a nurse, and I would really consider waiting until you can cut back or off of some of your medications. I work as an OBGYN nurse, and so I see it alot. Because the medications you take are similar to sedatives, basically you can have ALOT of mental disorders with your child, an increased risk of downs syndrome, and also a risk of miscarriage. Lithium and Strattera are REALLY bad for pregnant women, I think they increase the chance of Downs syndrome by about 40% or something like that...it's high. I would wait...you don't need a baby right now with special needs when you yourself are probably quite busy taking care of yourself. Wait for a bit and talk about alternative meds with your doctor. There are some out there that work EXTREMELY well with tourettes that are safe for pregnant women. Good luck, but wait until your doctor can mix up a better cocktail for you!

In order for you to have a safe and happy pregnacy is to stop taking all the meds you are. If you were to get pg right now, honestly your baby would not survive on all the drugs you take. The medicines would not go to you, they go directly to the embryo, thus giving it the full dosage of each pill.

Best advise.. don't do it. Adopt, if you want to have a child. There are many out there that need a really good home.

Good Luck!

Well first question are you in a stable loving marriage? If not, wait until you have those things to even consider pregnancy.
As for the other issues, I don't know what side effects those medications have on pregnancy so I should definitely ask your doctor before making the final decision.

Not really advice... but, I was told that I definitely can't go in the pool when I'm pregnant?! But, swimming is one of the best things for your body when you are pregnant? Or, you'll hurt your baby if you lay on your stomach or poke at your stomach... and, everyone wants to tell you that everything you are feeling is "too soon for that." The things we get to hear! :) Congrats and good luck!

My advice, don't get pregnant. Why do you want to get pregnant anyway? Kids are a LOT of work. You have your whole life to have a kid, live a little!

Those are some HEAVY meds you are on. You should talk to your doctor about that, or else you can have a physically screwed up child.

I think you should talk to your dr. about it first.... having a child is a huge thing and with all of your problems a dr. would be better to advise you on it than anyone else could. You wouldn't want to bring a child into the world just for it to have medical problems because you took a medication.

I would ask your doctor about trying to have a baby. On so many medications my personal opinion is it would not be safe. You can always adopt. There are a lot of children out there that need homes. Good Luck!

no offense but in the babys best interest, someone with your conditions may not be in the best position to have a child. the medications through the pregnancy will be just one of the many issues youll have to face. i know because i know people with parents of your condition. of course no one can change your mind so if you really really want a child, you might also want to consider adoption.

My niece is bipolar and her befriend has turret too! They have a child together that is fine and she also is very smart! While she was pregnant she did not take the meds but had to be closely monitored.
