I, personally, don't think social security will even exist. Our government is trying to tell us that in an off-the-wall way.. notice how the age of retirement is going up? Many people will die before they ever get to collect their pittance.

I'm more of an optimist. I think they will wait until the very last minute since most politicians are procrastinators and then do something since the elderly all vote and they know that! I think they will eventually have to raise the age higher or do something, apply at least some bandaids to the program, or it would have to go under as it is now I've read something like one working person is supporting 2 or 3 retired people, and of course this will be getting exponentially worse.
My husband's grandfather retired and lived to age 93 so he was on Social Security for almost 30 years. When they first designed SS the average life expectancy was actually 65, so it wasn't designed for people to be on for a 20 or 30 year retirement like it is now. So yes, they need to probably up the retirement age definitely to 68 or 70 or something like that.
I've also read that after about 2 years of Social Security you receive all the benefits that you paid into it, so I think that millionaires/trillionaires shouldn't receive any benefits after 2 years. Why should they receive more than they've paid into SS when they obviously have no financial need? It's basically welfare for the wealthy...I think that's stupid.

nope, the elderly folks of the modern day have been using up all of the countries social security money because they are less self-reliant due to the lack of science/technology around when they were young folk like some of us...
And no, its not Bush's fault... so dont let the lib's try to convince you it is...
FDR created social security as a temporary solution to help the poor who suffered through the depression.
Its a very socialist plan, of which FDR created many of... It was never meant to be permanent because it was very socialist and our country doesnt generally confide by socialism.
Socialism is our enemy....
Its just the White House advisors + Bush are so busy with Iraq and Congress... its really not a good time to be having to come up with a new plan to replace social security...

those with an uncomplicated modicum of intelligence. (i imagine you propose "and youthful.") yet allow's use the present 40 5-three hundred and sixty 5 days-old. If not something adjustments (i.e. legislations on the topic of solvency), the SS Fund will be thoroughly solvent till 2032. After that, advantages may be decreased by technique of about 25%. So even as they retire, they'd be receiving complete advantages for a minimum of five years, and seventy 5% of advantages after that. for sure, there ought to (and could) be adjustments to the gadget. the finest and maximum obtrusive change may be to reinforce the participation cap--the cutoff previous which no man or woman has payroll taxes taken--from $110,000 to $2 hundred,000. the different may be to reinforce the retirement age.

I believe social security will be there when I retire, but the benefits will be diluted to the point where I can only hope it will pay my cable bill.
If only I could invest some small portion instead...

Social Security depends on the management of the fund. If the money contributed by members are used properly, the money will even earn money and will be there but if mismanaged, the fund could disappear.

Depends on how old you are. By the time I am 65 it will probably be there but the pay-out will likely be very tiny.
