I just replaced my cheap (under $100) machine with a new Kenmore (I paid about $200), and I love it. In my opinion, the cheap machines aren't worth it. I hated sewing with that piece of junk. What a thoughtful gift!

My husband got mine at wal-mart it's a singer so it was a little more then the others but a lot studier from what i've had to deal with too. He spent about 120 on it. My dad found my moms singer machine at a vac n sew repair shop they'll buy machines from people who don't really want to invest in fixing them back up and when they get extra parts sometimes they fix the machine and resale it for a cheaper price.

A machine purchased at walmart or target, etc. will have one problem: you have no way to get them serviced, no one to teach you how to use it and if it breaks you are definitely gonna be S.O.L. Go to a place that specializes in sewing machines and ask questions. You want one that has certain features: stitches backwards and forwards, zig zags, and easily makes buttonholes. Lessons are good. You want someone to be able to answer questions and teach your lady how to use features she might not be familiar with. My personal favorite, probably under $500 machine is a Janome Gem Gold.

Yeah, walmart would be the place, but I would get a Brother machine. Mine has lasted me for 5 years and was only 60 bucks!

Target is another good place...a good machine doesnt need 1,000 of different stitches on it....just a few decent features....and definately can be found for under $100.00 what a great present! Good luck!

wal-mart for sure, that is where I have been looking. The cheapest I have seen there is $80 and they go up from there to a few hundred. Good luck.

Walmart has them for $79.00. They look pretty good. My husband bought me one that's like brand new at a yard sale for $35.00. The brand name is Brother and I'm very happy with it.
