The field of science examines any hypthothesis or belief in the same way... with an open mind, but very cautiously and rigorously. "Skeptically" is another way to put it. A scientifically minded person doesn't believe (or worse, deem as fact) anything without strong evidence. On the other hand, he/she doesn't *dis*believe, either, without strong evidence.

Since superstitions, by definition, are irrational beliefs based on fear and ignorance, science does not support them. Science has already examined the so-called evidence and found a more plausible explanation, or at least found no evidence to support the irrational belief.

Citing examples of the myriad cases where fringe beliefs came from a person's imagination would not prove that they always do.

I feel strongly that there is precious little skepticism in America, and perhaps the world, and that science and careful thinking have taken a back seat to gullibility and emotion-based judgement in many aspects of our lives.
