Lincoln came up with industrial/northerners. Wilson was a southern Dem descended from Jefferson and Jackson.
Industrial north began to turn Dem thru Labor, social issues as early as Bill Tilden, 1872. U.S. Civil War was for control of the West, which Republicans exploited.
LBJ passed pro-black legislation in mid-1960s, South turned Republican.

During FDRs terms with programs like the NRA, CCC, SSI, WPA, and a general vision of using governement to provide aid and social assistance. About that time the Democratic party became more liberal and socially progressive than the Republicans.

1913 changed everything. or during the time of the 13th and 14th amendment. some dirty politics during those times. kindof like now. with the patriot act I and patriot act II
