In my high school, people seem to get impressed by weird things.
For example, usually if someone says that they almost died once, people around them usually respond with "Wow, you are so lucky, I wish I almost died." Another one includes someone saying that they have the stomach flu. Replies include "Lucky, I wish I had the stomach flu." Why does being in dangerous situations or having deadly diseases make people popular? It does in my school, at least.

I think that if someone almost died, and they lived to talk about it, i would be impressed. But when someone says, "I wish..." especially if they are in school, I think that it would be that persons way out of going to school. Same goes for a stomach flu. God those suck!
We feel sorry for people that have been in horrific incidents, and we should be happy for them once that they have gotten better.
But to wish for the disorder, that is just mere stupidity.

Hi !!!
That is just ignorance. Probably they don't have anything much going on in their life's, and are impress by this dramatic experiences of others.
I doubt, that they really mean it. It just some kind of reaction to the other person. This are actually common ways of communication, where for example One say; GOOD MORNING,
How are YOU? When one really are NOT interested in the answer!!!!
Or another example, When asking someone what happened, then the person answers by saying; OH, I"M SO SORRY TO HEAR THAT!!! When in reality, probably one would NOT give it a second thought!!!
So don't pay to much mind to this things. This people are looking for acceptance, and some will go through great extends to get attention!!!
Be yourself, at all times. But I suggest NOT to take to much time for this. There are other more important things yet to be notice in life, than this!!!
GOD BLESS YOU , GOOD LUCK & HAPPY LIFE
A.Z.

I think this only applies in High School, I remember it there, but never in college or after. Several reasons come to mind. One they attribute the speaker's positive qualities to the event. For instance, if someone is a star football player and suffered a near death experience, they might mistaking attribute the near death experience to making him a star football player. This works with any desirable quality and everyone has got some desirable quality.
Secondly, while everyone wants to be an individual, they often find themselves conforming. In order to conform they frequently suppress interests, experiences, etc. that would cause them to stand out (if you admit you like Pokemon cards no one will ever invite you to their party). When another person expresses a remarkable experience that allows them to stand out, but still be accepted by the group the quality is often admired.
Finally, the flu thing, people aren't actually saying they want the flu, they are expressing the desire to have the positive effects that the flu would allow them to have (i.e. missing school, sympathy from others, being spoiled by parents, etc.).
Hope this helps...

Because in America when men are in danger or dangerous situations they are looked at as heros, not only by females by also by other men in their lifes. People want to seem heroic because that's just how our society has always been. It's not only in your school, it's all across America. In other cultures it differs. In another country a person getting good grades would be considered abmirarable. Or the mere fact that they just wish they were sick so they didn't have to go to school.

Kids in high school are pretty immature so they seem to be impressed by anything, besides the fact that school can be boring and anything else seems exciting. Being popular isn't important after high school anyways. So let the "cool" kids who almost died be popular cuz thats probably the coolest thing he'll ever do.

Change schools, or enlarge your circle of friends. If all else fails, stop drinking the water.
