It would really depend upon what you want to listen too. If your looking for more soloist style then i would recommend John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Myles Davis, Duke Ellingson, Dizzie Gilepsie. If you looking for more of a big band style i would check out Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band. These are all more of true jazz. Im not very familiar with modern artists

There was a very similar question a few days ago. Please click this link for my answer to that question. I also agree with the first part of the first answer very much.
The music I am suggesting is very good for beginners to jazz. It's great traditional jazz music and very accessible for new listeners. Also, all the albums I've suggested are classic jazz works, lots of people like them. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AhNKp7VzuouxKIqS63lNvWXsy6IX?qid=20070205185348AAue0NM&show=7#profile-info-a88c7ce0ae93e3c161f54fdbec330759aa

I like swing.. main stream jazz.. Oscar Peterson sounds old but he's good and easy listening.. I also love Stacey Kent and Diana Krall, they have good voice and they sing jazz well..

I also like modern jazz.. I like chic corea, and makoto ozone.. They're brilliant piano players.. I also love Tierney Sutton..

I personally like bebop jazz (Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, etc.).

Also, you might want to check out Miles Davis.
