I won't argue with your main point, but I will with your aside.
Simply put, there are simpletons that believe the tripe and radical leftists who start it. These are real people, generally those who are too idealistic and do not generally understand the meaning of compromise. Leftist causes stick together - check out campuses - the hardcore feminists (the ones who think it's ok to kill men, including their fathers), rabid environmentalists, animal rights nuts - they all support each others causes.
They are slightly different than the radical right, as they typically are more principled (a white supremacist nutcase would never stand together with a religious whacko). The party that has been in power (GOP) had an apparent affinity with the right, and that was exploited by the radicals on the left. Everything Bush does, even if it benefits one leftist group, will get condemned by all - because they all stick together. It's rather unprincipled and dishonest when you think about it, but radicals (of any stripe) aren't exactly known for being paragons of virtue, stability, or integrity.
It really isn't just the radical left. Think Clinton years. Do you think the majority of Americans cared if he was getting hummers from an overweight and (thankfully) obscure intern? But the radical right did, and succeeded in changing a lot of people's opinions.
Where you go wrong here is that we are there for oil. Not much has come out of there - and it was supposed to come out to pay for rebuilding. Even if the foreign fighters did not attack the oil infrastructure, we would NOT release oil to the world market in large enough quantitities for American companies to make a profit. The reason is obvious if you shed American centric thoughts.
There's a big country to the North of Iraq. And they produce oil. And they need a lot of money. And they will NOT stand by and let the U.S. take over those fields.

I do believe that Bush is making money. Not on Iraq oil...on the oil and gas produced here in the US. Look at the price jump on a single gallon of gas in the last 7 years. 7 years ago in N.E. Ohio we were paying $.99 a gallon for gas. That same gallon in S.W. Pa now costs $2.17 today. All the major oil companies are posting record profits while middle & lower income Americans can hardly afford to fill the gas tanks on our cars just to get to work....and don't say "ride a bus" because where we live they are cutting service hours, days & routes because of budget problems. (They can't afford the costs of fuel either!)
Be honest, Bush doesn't know what it is like to live paycheck to paycheck....much less live on a budget or go without anything! He has no concept of what it is really like for "normal" people. If we are fighting the war in Iraq for oil...why aren't we getting any forcing the price of gas & heating oil down? Or to pay our expenses to be in Iraq or Afganistan? And if OPEC is so darn powerful why don't they take care of the problems in Iraq and Afganistan? Aren't we their customer? Aren't the members of the UN their customer? Why can't we all band together and force the price of oil lower? They need/want our money just as much as we want/need their oil.

Oh it is completely free, public, and open knowledge that anyone can find in even the most neo-conservative or neo-fascist media.
Remember the massive Enron frauds ? All of those were connected to Bush and Cheney and other such creatures. Enron was an energy company that ruined the lives of thousands of Americans by raping their pension funds. Subsequently it was blacked out in the American media once Bush began gaining power. There are other such energy companies linked to Bush directly that are harvesting oil in Iraq through federal government contracts (i.e. spoils of war) and making massive profits on the stuff.
Oh also a real COWINQIDINK (coincidence) one of the Enron fraud connected men was on the run in England, where he was found brutally murdered, for no cause or reason, in a London park not three months ago.
Baa Baa black sheep have you any wool ? hum hum hum

I don't really think they force themselves. They just seem to go with the flow. Not questioning oneself is way easier than doing the opposite. It is hard to break free from a christian environment. Sometimes it is more rewarding just to keep quiet. I believe there are way more atheists among christians than they might think. Some just do the motions. If however the balance starts swinging to the other side, then we just have to wait for that tipping point where they are free to tell what they really think. A lot of following the others is grounded in fear: The fear of not being accepted. 'What will they think of me?' It is a severe psychological problem. Not everyone can break free so easily from their own shackles.

u are wrong because halliburton has gotten billions in reconstruction funds - which are being "wasted" accroding to reports (wonder where they went?) and it also has millions in oil contracts to rebuild the oil fields damaged in the two gulf wars and insurgent bombings - halliburton is controlled by bushs cronies, including dick cheney who used to be its vice pres i think
the US has the power to defeat the insurgency in one day, like Stalin would have. but instead we jeapordize the lives of americans by allowing the violence to continue - giving us a reason to stay - and "rebuild" the oil fields and bring democracy to iraq - and make a killing off of it

Some believe it because they trust the mainstream media. Some believe it because they want to believe the worst about Bush. Others know it to be false, but keep repeating it because it furthers their agenda.
No honest intelligent person would ever disseminate such garbage.
