Thanks, pretender, that is exactly what i was referring to. I honestly believe that most people, if they think back can remember a time when they DID care. A time before disillusionment set in. I also believe that these same dissillusioned can still become a powerful force for change. In order for that to happen, they have to find a common goal in which to believe. I am not naieve zhadow, i know 300 million people will not all have the same beliefs, but im not pointing out that we should have all the same beliefs. Perhaps only one. look around. Dont assume im a child, folks. ask deeper questions of yourself. answer deeper... Why are you disillusioned sgt? Can you believe again in the possibility of people uniting for a common cause? Can we, in this country be so innocent again, or have we all been far too jaded...

It depends on the goal. But that said, I *often* pray for a leader who is able to draw us together by reminding us of what we agree on, and not just what we disagree about.

I doubt we'll ever be wholly united--that's the nature of democracy, and debate has its place. Even Kennedy had his detractors. But if even a majority of us were united behind a selfless goal... wouldn't that be great?

man kind has always not been completely innocent .. the people have always had issues and why shouldnt we be united and innocent with the other countrys as well? if every one just put their armys and weapons away we would have no reason to fight cause no one would be able to fight in the first place with out fighting materials or armys so you ask why well why cant pigs fly hmm there is no right nor wrong answer to this. to not have issues the world would be very abnormal and totally fonerable to whom ever had gotton their hands on weapons or made self made ones. so yeah we are all destonded to life in life miseriabley until the day we die cause no matter where you will go there will be some one who is agaisnt your cause and racest sexest judging by what you do and say to feel better about themself to gain self satifaction at any cost...

The answer is in the question. Apathy is the very reason we aren't united. Not enough people care to dig below the surface issues and really delve into the substance needed to unite.

In my opinion there's only one thing that will bring about unity - a major world conflict. I'm not talking about another 9/11. I'm thinking it would take something far greater to get Americans to take their minds off going to work and buying the next video game console...

In order to unite there would first have to be a set of codified goals ratified by the constituents and validated by the People. What are the odds of that happening in the near future?

I don't know if anyone could, truly, in any country. It's asking why human nature is human nature. It is a utopian society that can do that, regardless of country, and that has been pondered and written about for centuries. Good question, though.
