I'm interested in people's opinions on which countries do they believe, have consistentantly produced the most contraversial, funniest, scariest, etc etc throughout the 20th century.
If you believe that this title doesnt belong to one country alone - which country(s) do you think have excelled in a particiular genre - i,e, comedy, horror, action, drama etc

I'm interested in people's reasons for their choices.
thank you.

For the record my own opinions (in no particular order) are Spain (brilliant for thriller and drama - Cría cuervos. Todo sobre mi madre), UK - comedy & drama (some deemed so contraversial, they were nearly or actually banned - i.e. clockwork orange, and the omen (original ). And comedy, recognised as the pioneers in satire, dating from the 18th and 19th century (and more recently result of the 1960s satire wave - monty python, etc). and last but not least the USA, for excellent advancements in special effects, and many iconic directors - such as martin scorsese, steven spielberg and many more.

Thanks to all who answered.

There are so many, it's hard to say just one country.

I mean, I love Russian film and I took a whole Russian film class in college. They kind of had an explosion of creativity in film editing, and discovering that you could use film to tell a story in ways that went far beyond just statically recording a stage play, way back in the silent era (1920s Russian filmmakers: Dziga Vertov, Eisenstein....) And as far as the 1960s-1980s go re: Russian film, I'm one of those people who will go sit through 4-hour movies by Andrei Tarkovksy, over and over and over again. I mean, if it was a book, how much longer would it take to read than 4 hours?

And then France, especially but not limited to the French New Wave, and Italy. And Japan. And of course one has to mention Sweden because of Bergman, and Germany, and then there are great filmmakers from all over....India....Spain....there's that Iranian filmmaker I never seem to get a chance to see anything by....and there's the Hong Kong stuff, some of which is really cool... and there's some Chinese stuff I like....

But overall I'd have to say the U.S., I think, just for sheer variety of different types of creativity -- everything from early silent comedies, through, like, 1930s screwball comedies, to Orson Welles, to classic westerns, the 1970s stuff (Coppola, Scorcese...) to, for example, in animation no other country had a Walt Disney equivalent, and I think the U.S. probably has the most interesting documentary tradition (my favorite is Frederick Wiseman)....

thanks for asking a fun question to answer.

The USA has the best movies. We have many, many talented folks and the money to hire talented folks from other countries. While I have seen some really great movies from other countries, if you're asking about sheer numbers then it's got to be the USA! Nobody comes close when it comes to comedy, horror, action, historical or science fiction but I'll grant there's some good drama from other countries.

The U.S. makes the best and the worst films year after year. Who else could make Batman Begins. Nobody does heart and superhero like the U.S. even though the director and most of the cast were not American. Who could make the first Rocky or Citizen Cane, or Animal House and Old School. The U.S. Film community is so diverse, so ambitious and so unencumbered by pretensions. Walk the Line or Super Troopers.

The best movies I've seen are from France. I have seen some awesome movies from Germany also. Most movies made in the U.S. are pretty good as far as graphics. I haven't too many comedies from other countries, so I'd say the U.S. has that and horror (because of the graphics and special effects we can do.) Some Japanese films are okay, but the are too cheesey for me to handle. Drama goes to France in first, U.S. in second, and Germany in third.

The USA definitely makes the best movies in my opinion. But some French movies (like Amelie) are really good, and Japan has good horror movies, like the original Grudge.
