I've been really sick for two days now and I finally went to the doctor. They actually did a swab test and determined I indeed have the flu. They actually said I was highly contagious. I'm really worried now because my pet rat's cage has been in my room this entire time. She hasn't been out or had direct contact with me since I've felt sick, but obviously since she's in my room she's exposed to my germs. Can rats get the flu, and if so how will I know, and what can I do. Please I dont want to be the reason she dies.

Your rat will be fine (well, she won't get the flu from you).

Rats don't catch people diseases, and people don't catch rat diseases. The plague was carried by a flea that lived on rats. The flea bit people and made them sick (the same fleas bit the rats and the rats didn't get sick).

NO! Pet rats do not get the flu!

They get other respiratory diseases like Mycoplasmosis, SDA, and Sendai, but they do not get the human flu.

The flu virus is of course a viral infection. Virus's are tested on animals which of course are usually lab rats. But, before you panic, call your local vet and ask them what they recommend and then go from there. I am sure they won't steer you wrong. I sure hope you feel better soon.

I don't think rats can catch human flu, but they can get other 'rat' diseases.
