My instructor has been referring to the system used in state competitions here... One based on either 5 through 1 or 6 through 1 with 1 being the highest. But then there are other ones for traditional band using 1 as the beginner level. What really are the differences between these two systems?

Thanks in advance! =)

One level (the one with 1 being the highest) is referring to a RATING system. 1 is "superior", with 5 or 6 as "poor." Judges use these when rating a band or solo/ensemble competitions.

The other system, with Grade 1 being the lowest, is rating the LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY of a song. Often there are songs/pieces that also are rated as 1 1/2 or 2 1/2. Depending on the state you live in, the level of difficulty can go as high as 7. ABRSM is a rating system used often in Canada and Great Britain that has similar grades for performance, theory, and aural skills.
