It's the paragraph that is basically a summary of whatever your paper is about- what you are going to prove or disprove that sort of thing.

A thesis statement is the the central idea around which your research revolves. A thesis statement can be posed as a statement of intent or a question.

A thesis statement should be specific and answerable, otherwise why would you be writing about the topic at hand.

For example: I discuss whether World War II was bad for the United States. This statement is too broad, normative (depends on your persective), and not exactly specific.

I discuss whether the invasion of Northern Africa by the United States resulted in the eventual expulsion of Nazi forces from Africa.

More specific, you can present the arguments for/against about the specific topic, and it's manageable.

A thesis statement is often the last sentence in the 1st paragraph of a paper. Many use it to answer a question. For example I may right a paper that is about President Bush and his Iraqi Plan. So my thesis statement would be.

Why is it that President Bush feels the need to put more troops in Iraq?

So the rest of the paper would support my thesis statment. I hope this helps.

It is another word for topic sentence. A thesis statement states what your essay is about. It states your position on the subject.

A thesis statment tells the reader how you will interpret the significance of the subject matter under discussion.
it's a road map for the paper; in other words, it tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the paper.

A thesis statment is more like a introduction. It sumarizes what your topic is about.
