I hope so but I don't think it will be anytime soon. The presidents of the colleges don't want to lose the bowl games that bring a lot of money to the colleges. I would suggest a playoff system where the bowl games are the playoffs. Plus I was told by a sports show host who also played college football that. a playoff system is a bad idea because if a team is really good towards the end of the season they won't try very hard if they already are guaranteed a playoff spot. I have come up with a playoff system that I think would work. I would make all the independent teams pick a conference. There are 11 conferences and 5 of those conferences have two divisions that makes 16 divisions or conferences. I would pick the two teams with the best records from these 16 conferences or divisions. for a 32 team playoff system. I would make the playoff the bowl games that would be 31 bowl games right now there are 32 bowl games so one might have to be dropped or maybe you can make that game the army navy game. There are 14 weeks in a regular season. I would have the division or conference championships with in the regular season so there will be no by weeks than that would leave 3 more weeks that would be played after finals. There are 3 weeks of bowl games already so nothing will change I think it is perfect here is a link I made to what it would look like. http://www.geocities.com/rocknrob73/NCAA_Division_1Aplayoffs.html?1171036207390

Probably not anytime soon. The BCS just had their 4 year contract renewed this last year and the NCAA/Universities have too much money tied up in the system. A playoff would be possible with scheduling (the idea that it interferes with exams isn't true because Division I is the only Division in the NCAA that doesn't host a football playoff and the other divisions have been very successful with their playoff systems). The drawback is that most university presidents believe that a playoff system would result in a loss in revenue considering that money from the bowl games (which are in the millions for BCS bowls) are split between the school itself and the school's conference. So obviously money talks louder than public opinion.

Wouldnt count on it. You have to remember that the NCAA is a buisness. That means they are trying to make money. They make a lot of money off of all these bowls that are sponsored by companies. It just wouldnt work out. As for now, be happy with the way the BCS is. Whatever may happen, teams do decide their fate. If you win all your games and you play in a real conference, you will be in the National Championship. If you happen to be a Boise State fan, tell your school to ditch the WAC, become an independent, get a schedule that actually has some good teams on it, and then you can get into the National Championship.

Not soon, but after last year with all the question about who is better than who. We just might be seeing a playoff system. In 10 years or so.

Every division in college football already has a playoff system EXCEPT for division 1. They are way past due.

means money going away from the BCS conferences
not to mention when it would take place??
there's a reason the season ends in late nov./early dec. and there's 2-3 weeks off before bowls start and that is exams
scheduling a playoff seriously interferes with the writing of exams for 16 teams

Too much money in the setup they have now, fans will travel to go to one central bowl game and they can have huge contract deals with sponsors (see Tostitos/Nokia). Plus even if they did there would still be debate over who should've been the last team in, plus you have students schedules to deal with anyway. It'd just create even more of a mess.

Unfortunately, it will not be in the near future. I think it is inevitable that it will happen some day but I'd put money that it sure won't happen in the next 5 years.

Never..because as long as it's profitable to the few people it's profitable to, they will never change. College football has and always will be about the money.

No there is just way too much money at stake when it comes to the bowl games. Just like anything else in life, money is paramount.
