10-30 and 10-40 refers to viscosity rating of oil as rated by Society Of Automotive Engineering. Commonly you will see SAE 10-40....SAE 10-30 etc as rating on oils. Follow manufactures guidelines for oil to use as they base this on motor use, and climate changes. Unless specified by manufacturer 10-30 is a good general use oil to use for moderate climates. 10-40 would be more applicable to high performance motors that tend to run hotter. In any case you should follow manufactures specifications.

The very best place to look for the factory suggested viscosity engine oil for your car is listed under specifications, in the manual in your glove compartment. Every brand of motor oil on the market labeled 10w 30 has their own specifications. The interesting points are flow points and flash points. The flow point is the lowest temperature the oil in question will flow usually -10 to -20 degrees below zero. In the case of 100% synthetics 10w 30 the flow rates are generally much lower -30 - 40 degrees. The flash to fire point +440 - + 450 is higher than regular non -synthetics. It's always more important to get the oil up to the top of an engine as quickly as possible on a cold morning thus a 5w-30 is the overall choice nowadays. Fords, Toyota's and others have dropped to a 5w-20 year round. These motors have clearances that are a little tighter. Rods, mains, lifters, pistons and cam bearings will not do a death rattle @ +220 degrees Fahrenheit oil temps. For your own information pick a specific engine oil on your computer and compare the cold pour points and high temp. flash to fire points in a 10w-30 and 10w40. you'll be surprised when you see the specifications.

Actually 5W30 is now the prefered motor oil to be used by most car manufacturers. The lower the number the thinner the oil. So in the winter 5 weight will flow better through your cold engine. In the summer it is 30 weight. Better than 10W40..... 40 is to heavy.

It will not hurt a thing. The only difference between the two is that the 10-40 maintains it's viscosity a little better at higher temperatures. At lower (ambient) temps. there is no difference so it won't even affect the starting. Remember, a recommendation is just that: a recommendation.

10-w 30 is a thinner oil and easier on the motor for cold starts in winter months.

You always use oil in your motor. If you mean when to change the oil, every 3000 miles. The number indicates the oils viscosity, the higher the number the more viscose the oil is.

oil designations represent the flow charasteristic of the oil at different temperatures. in the case of 10W-30, the oil will flow as a 10 weight oil in lower temperatures and as a 30 weight oil at higher temperatures. the W actually means winter. designations such as these are needed in colder climates because thinner oil flows better obviously, ( 10 weight ) than thicker oil ( 30 weight ). but as the engine warms up and reaches operating temperature a thicker viscosity oil is needed to adequately protect the engine components. i used 5W-30 in all my vehicles, it flows down to -30 degrees F and is recommended for all season use. best bet is for you to consult your owners manual to see what oil they suggest for the engine.

10-30 in the winter, its a lighter weight. thats what the w stands for. 10-40 in the summer, added protection for those hot days.
