Well the 4x4 platform does not actually use Opteron's, it uses Athlon FXs. The only motherboard available (yes there is only one right now) is this one:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131146 they changed the name to socker L now, and its called Quad FX instead of 4x4, but this is what you are looking for. (I know its confusing, they keep changing names). It will only take the FX-70, FX-72, or FX-74 processors. Honestly the board is a bit of a waste, since a single Core 2 Quadro will outperform this setup.

Now if you do want multiple Opterons, yes you need a server board because those use a different socket. That is also a bit of a waste because it will end up costing you more than even the Quad FX, and will not perform any better for workstation/desktop use.

As far as I know, you'll need a server board. But the other day there was a story in the tech tabloids about someone using the Quad FX mobo with certain Opterons. The chips were compatible with regular unbuffered DDR2 modules.
