they were both living in fantasyland refusing to accept the world was changing; and refusing to change with it. Progress, the great equalizer had caught up with these two miscreants and they refused to acknowledge that fact.

I am having a hard remembering much from Death of a Salesman, but you may look for a theme about being something you are not, or how individuals are not always as they seem once you get to know them. For one, Gatsby was not his real name, it was Jay Gatz. He rose from obscurity to wealth, after being snubbed. Not alot of themes in either book that would support the answer that talks about the world changing and both not being aware of it.
