I'm not sure if my recommndation is age appropriate, but you ought to read "Catch-22," by Joseph Heller. It's outrageously funny, once you get into the author's sense of humor.

Do I ever!
Asterisk mark the YA/teen books, and ^ is for more adult and non-fic books, just to sort 'em out a bit. And these are my favorites on WWII:
*The Book Thief-- Markus Zusak
*Soldier X-- Don Wulffson
*Briar Rose-- Jane Yolen
*The Devil's Arithmatic-- Jane Yolen
*If I Should Die Before I Wake-- Han Nolan
*Anne Frank and Me-- Cherie Bennet & Jeff Gottesfeld
^Children of the Flames-- Lucette Matalon Lagnado & Sheila Cohn Dekel
^Rena's Promise-- Rena Kornreich Gelissen
^The Pianist-- Wladyslaw Szpilman
^Night-- Elie Wiesel
A Thread of Grace-- Mary Dorian Russel
*Forgotten Fire-- Adam Bagdasarian (Not WWII, but WWI. I threw it in because it deals with the Armenian genocide, a similar idea of the Holocaust.

something via Stephen Ambrose is readable, engrossing and factually maximum ideas-blowing. His better effective books contain Band of Brothers, Citizen infantrymen, and D-Day, June 6, 1944: the Climactic conflict of international conflict II His are protection rigidity histories, yet in case you opt on fiction, there's a lot available.

Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon
Power of One by Bryce Courtenay
Lord of the Flies by William Golding (the boys are stranded on the island because their plan was shot down during a flight to safety during WWII) and Golding's attempt to create a believable society on the island is based on his experiences during the war.
Hiroshoma (I forget the author)
