Very Good question I asked my self this may times when I was younger. I started studying the voice and took vocal classes. As I took class I learned that "nobody is born a bad singer" Its true. Singing requires learning just as any other instrament beleive it or not. As you sing in higher pitches mroe your vocal chords on that part of the voice does get stronger over time. This is why babies can not tlak well. So I recommend the most inportant thing is to KEEP singing. All you need is practice practice practice. Over time yo uwill be able to hit the right notes and sing higher. Sing a song then record it and hear yourself and see what needs inporvement. Good luck on your musical Journey,

Dear ColtsGal,
If you live in Indiana, you have a marvelous opportunity for singing lessons. The U of I in Bloomington is famous for its music department, and many good singers have trained there. There will be a lot of good teachers around.
Some of the previous answers, especially Jay's, were right on the mark, so go out and look for a teacher. Interview two or three at the least: It's kinds like going to the doctor's: if you don't like the "chemistry" between yourself and this person, then it's probably not going to be a good working relationship. If you're not sure, then try one or two lessons to see if this person's methods suits you. Watch out for little details- do they promise you the moon in three easy lessons? Stay away! Do hey tell you that their method is THE ONLY way? Stay away!
Over priced doesn't always mean you're going to get quality results, either. Be picky, it's the only voice you have, and there are no replacement parts.
A good self-help book that I would like to recommend:
Freeing the natural voice
Kirsten Linklatter.
She has a lot of common sense ideas for singers, even though her book is meant for actors. She's easy to understand, and the drawings are funny.
Good luck, and keep singing

The "higher pitch voice" is called head voice. The head voice is usually used for singing songs composed by people. This means reading notes on the staff, i.e. Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do
The regular voice is called chest voice. That's what most people sing like nowadays. If you don't understand what I'm saying, all of these songs you hear around you by people such as Justin Timberlake, Fergie, etc. sing in chest voice.
Chest voice comes naturally, and there's really nothing to learning about it. Relax your vocal chords, drop your jaw, and sing a line from your favorite song.
If you still have trouble, try singing the major scale in head voice (do re mi fa so la ti do), and go down from there and try changing to chest voice slowly.
Don't push yourself to hard into doing these things though. You want them to sound smooth and musical, and pushing it beyond the limit can damage your chords.
Go into the bathroom, lock the door, look in the mirror and block every noise out. Sing and hear yourself. Learn the things you like and don't like.
For more about chest voice and head voice, check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_voice
For more about the Major Scale (Do Re, etc.), check this out:

If trouble continues, try and take some vocal lessons.

There are a number of matters that you simply have got to preclude in an effort to understand how to sing bigger. If you had been in a position to stir clear of those matters then you'll be in a position to sing bigger with out a lot attempt as they are going to upgrade your voice, your method and your total making a song.
