I see you live in New York...since I don't, I found this website for you. I don't know the town, so I couldn't look it up for you. Different parts of each state are different!

http://realestate.yahoo.com/Neighborhoods

It gives you the average cost of living in your area along with the average wage.

We live in KC MO area, and make the median there (around 40,000) we live comfortably.

Hope this helps you out. Starting a new job can be so scary wondering if it will be enough. The key to having enough in any job is to budget and live within your means! Don't do the credit cards and rack up bills you'll have to pay later (as well as trying to live later).

Depends on where you live & the cost of living there. My best friend & her husband earn that together (as I just helped her complete her taxes) & they live in AR.

They own a 4 bed/2 full bath 2000 sq. ft. home (built 2002) on 3 acres. She drives a Hyundai Sonata (2005), and he drives a Ford single cab pick-up (2005). They have 2 kids that go to public school. They do not have credit card debt! That is a big factor in their money budgeting. I envy them. Still working on mine.

They don't go out much as far as movies & such, but they do go out to eat about once a month to nice restaurants (where the meal is over $40). They have to save money for Christmas of course, but they don't want for anything. They are planning a cruise in September (for the low rates). They and their kids wear the latest name brand clothes & their kids have all the electronic gadgets. They have a brand new computer & DSL internet access too. However, clothes shopping is limited to every other month. She puts back money to be able to do so, which means they sacrifice by taking their lunch to work instead of going out. Big purchases, like the computer, have to wait 6 months or more in order to purchase it. This is how they avoid credit card debt.

If you are single in the South, I'd say that's a great living for one. You don't need a big home & you aren't feeding 4 every week. If not, you'll need to budget wisely.

I believe it's the same in all states that the position of a social worker reaps it's rewards in a passion for the field, not the pay. If you have this passion, then everything else will fall in place. You'll create a life around your income.

I live in Kansas City and make $43,000.00/yr. I have everything that I need, I own my own house and a new car, go clubbing weekly and take vacations when I have the time. If I find something I want badly or think I need it I can buy it and pay cash. I don't waste my money, but then I also am not a penny-pincher. On the other hand, if i had the same income and lived in San Diego I might have trouble making ends meet. The secret is being happy with what you have.

It depends. Do you live by yourself or is a spouse contributing? Do you have other debts or is everything paid for? do you want an apartment or a large house?

I make just shy of 40K and own a 1700 square foot house that I'm remodeling from top to bottom. I have no problem paying for everything I want. but I live in a small town in Washington State, and my husband makes the same as I do, so he's contributing.

40K is doable.

Do you mean New York City, or just New York State.

NYC, $40,000 won't even get you a refrigerator box to live in.

really depends on where (country) of residence. Over this side of the universe (Asia) and in a first world city it could probably be: a single lady working in an office? uses public transport, live in a govt. subsidised apartment, go on annual vacation - quite "average" lifestyle, generally She'd be quite comfortable tho without a lot of luxury/extravagance

it all really depends on what state you live in. in california you would probably be on welfare and almost definitely living in a box. in states like idaho you would have a decent paying job and a decent house.
