They are relateable on so many other levels. The Simpsons in general have an intellectual element intertwined so eloquently that most people miss it. There are biblical, literary, and artistic references that a "learned" individual would understand and appreciate. Homer and Bart represent a part of us all that would LOVE to slack off at work and pull a prank on the school principal! But that is simply the surface...there's an underlying meaning and message behind every joke. The writers are geniuses for making something that ALL viewers will find entertaining and funny.

LOL! Uh...kind-of...b-but... BUT WHAT? But...this is the same Homer Simpson that ate 64 slices of American Cheese in one sitting... used beer to alleviate the symptoms of a heart attack... concocted an illegal narcotic beverage... wrecked a space-mission while chasing potato chips in zero-gravity, and refused to share the secret of inner peace with women when questioned by his son: "NO! They are foreign DEVILS!" Ha ha ha ha ... My point is this: Homer might SAY he works hard, and SAY he loves his kids, but in this cartoon series, his actions and his words don't match... not even close! His main ongoing problem is excessive self-indulgence, and he does not even remotely consider the merciless effect on his own health, his family, or anyone else, when he mindlessly gluts himself into oblivion. His answer to 'God' is a lie, and his God's reply only shows the gullibility and lack of true consideration of Homer's deity... Himself. The Simpsons is a great and hilariously funny show... taken in the right perspective, that is.

I think it is because he reminds people of their fathers, or uncles, or grandfathers. He is a loveable goof, so he is fun to watch. Homer can't seem to catch a break, but he is always hopeful.

We love anybody stupider and more boorish than ourselves, and those two specialize in it.....also in some small way they are "rebels" and make virtues out of things like over-eating and misbehaving in school that appeals to the middle school in every adult man (who watches the show) and there's enough satire thrown in to make it funny...................

Because he's hilarious! And I don't think what he represents is all negative. I mean, it spite of everything, he's a devoted family man, which is pretty cool in my book.

Because he's funny, and some of his actions and attitudes are familiar to American viewers.

Probably because he gets himself into weird situations and says "D'OH!" a lot.
