Depends where you plan to solicit work. New York and LA casting directors often look for different things. But some general rules of thumb are:

1. Color vs. B&W: Go color! Personally I think B&W are ore striking but when you're going for auditions the trend so far has been towards color pics. Also if you have a choice when you get your reproductions made, pay the extra and go for the photos as opposed to the lithographs.

2. Try not to wear any white clothing as it has a tendancy to wash out your color.

3. Bring four or five changes with a few pieces to mix and match. You may not use all of them in the shoot but it's nice to have options. Especially if your photographer plans to shoot outdoors.

4. Make SURE before you shoot one frame, that the photographer knows the look you want to go for and how you are going to be trying to sell yourself.

5. You don't need a ton of makeup, HOWEVER...... Perhaps a light base to even out the skin tone, is extremely helpfull. Photographers can always touch up a few blemishes here and there or a hair out of place. But if your skin is really effected you may want to opt for a professional to help you make the pics look their best.

In the end, the photographs are the first thing the casting directors are going to look at. You may only be in front of their eyes for 2 seconds, and in that 2 seconds they decide if they want you or not. Your head shot will always be your first point of contact, don't short change yourself, take every step you can to make it the best it can be.

If you are going to a photographer that takes professional headshots they already have that under control. There will be someone, the photographer or assistant, to make sure you look great for the photos. If there isn't someone, and the photographer expects you to take care of all your makeup, you shouldn't use them. You are paying this person to make you look best in a situation you're not usually in, so they should help you.

You NEED makeup or you will be washed out by the lights. It smoothes out your complexion and you don't want pores to be visible in a close up. It can be done in a more natuaral style if you prefer; but you most likely won't be happy with results without any.

You should be SLEEPING and getting plenty of rest so you are refreshed and your eyes aren't puffy.

Give yourself plenty of time to get there on time so you don't have anxiety in having to rush.

Your mood can make a BIG difference.

Good LUCK!! ; )

You should get a professional to do makeup if your serious about work where looks are important-don't waste your money on amateurs if you want to get work with your face.
