First of all, diamonds are not as rare as people think. It is a huge conspiracy! The perception that they are rare is perpetuated by heavy advertising and marketing. Billions of dollars are spent to keep demand high. It is no secret that the prices of diamonds are also kept artificially high through tight supply chain management, ie. a limited number is released to a select few distributors who in turn re-sell it down the supply chain. The exceptions? Fancy colored diamonds, large sized diamonds with good color, clarity and cut grades, phenomenal diamonds (color-change) etc.

Back to your question. It's hard to give a straight answer because it really depends. There are so many variables! Size, Quality, Origin etc...

My opinion is, YES - Ruby is worth more than Diamond simply because in extra-fine qualities and extra-large sizes, Ruby is still many times rarer than Diamond. In fact, the most expensive per carat price paid for any gemstone on auction is for Ruby, and not Diamond.

You question leaves too many unknowns to get a completely straight answer, this is because we value of gem quality diamonds are according to a number variables. There are a number of different types of diamonds which can have the same cut and weight but vary in quality due to color, imperfections (etc). In addition the refractive qualities of diamonds and rubies are different, so it is not practical for them to have the same cut.

Having said this, in general a high quality diamond will be worth more than a Ruby of the same weight. This is because there is a higher demand for diamonds and the supply is limited (partly due to limited resources, partly due to controlled supply to the market).

From what I understand, the answer is yes. Diamonds are actually quite common, but most diamonds aren't things people would want to wear as jewelry. Furthermore, diamonds can be generated in a laboratory fairly easily these days.

It depends on various factors. Diamonds are formed by carbon atoms, and rubies are formed by Aluminum oxide (Al2O3). Nowadays both of those minerals can be easily manufactured, but price of the gemstones is usually higher if they are natural.

Now, as you might already know, pure Aluminum oxide has no color, it is as translucent as glass. Various impurities make it red, blue, etc. (rubies, sapphires...) So you know that if a mineral is impure, it is natural. There are even tests that can tell for sure whether the gemstone is natural (and thus has to be sold for a large sum of money) or it's a fake. Those tests are built on determining the impurities the gem has and comparing those impurities to the ones that gems originally have when mined at all known occurrences.

It depends on the person's opinion. Which one looks better, and what are you going to use it for (LOL) But diamond is generally worth more than a ruby
