To add some more info to what is already here.........The brain produces a chemical called phenethylemine when people are in love, sex, etc. When depressed this natural occurrence is blocked. Chocolate has not only phenthylemine, but also a natural source of caffeine ( part of the xanthine group) and several other drugs that act as vasoconstrictors. These elevate blood pressure, diuretic and act as bronchodilators and can possibly be attributed to serotonin uptake.
So yes, chocolate can make you feel better when depressed but as with most drugs after the breakdown (crash) you sometimes feel worse. It has also been used as an aphrodisiac for centuries due to these effects.

1-1/2 cup milk 1 cup half and half 2 TBSP sugar 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips 1/2 tsp vanilla Place the milk, half and half, sugar and chocolate in a double boiler and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly with a whisk. Cook the mixture until the chocolate is completely melted; continue to heat the mixture for another minute, then remove it from heat. Add the vanilla and blend. For an extra frothy hot chocolate, use a stick blender to whip the mixture, or blend on whip in an electric blender. This recipe makes enough to serve two, and use whipped cream for an extra boost
