Read "The Art of Happiness" by The Dalai Lama. You can get it used at amazon.com.
Worked for me!

I also think about how many people have it worse off than I do.

we all have negative thinking in life at times, yours sounds more severe than others. for improvement, i would say build your self esteem up by ignoring people who be little & criticize you. After all, what people think or say never matters, why? because it does NOT benefit your future. some people can be downright rude & cruel because they've got problems in their life & putting down other people makes them feel like they may be better. It's a psychiatric thing. Now, some people just want to talk crap because they simply do not have anything else better to do or they are jealous of you & wish they could have what you have. It can be for any reason, but whatever reason, it's always weird & an envious type of thing they have against you. Don't let these people upset you or stress you so much, it's NOT worth it. You should always remind yourself how special you are & that your family loves you (which is enough & the greatest kind of love you ever really need in your life) and think about how much you've accomplished in life, think about your goals & focus on the future. No matter what, people will always have something to say, it's up to you to turn that around & IGNORE IT. it's better to focus on YOU & what's in store for your future rather than focus on people who end up upsetting you.

GOOD LUCK!

Start with looking at yourself and how YOU feel about who you are. If YOU think that you're a good person then you're half way there.

If you find that there are things in your personality or the way that you interact with other people that you should change then try to take them one at a time and start to change those things about yourself.

Bottom line is that how you feel about yourself is the most critical thing. What other people say may be mean or cruel, but YOU control how those things affect you. You only get upset or down for days if you choose to let other peoples words override your own feelings about yourself.

Good luck.

make a complete fool of yourself and love it.
forget about all the people you dont like and all the things that make you think negatively.
skip through a field! dance in the rain!
[or at least do your version of these things]
go out and have a little fun and just, for a little while, forget about all your worries. hopefully, in time, you will be able to take everything in that light and be a much more positive person!
with all the stress of life, it may be hard. but just try to have a little fun!

If it is really bad at a point of depression, go to cognitive therapy. You could always get the book "Feeling Good" by David D. Burns.
