i think kobe could care less that he has the number one selling jersey. it doesnt make him any more or any less of a player. nor does it get him more money for it. the reason he gave for changing it was because it was "the beginning of the second half of his career" (he started off his basketball career with #24 back in high school). a lot of players are very sentimental when it comes to their jersey number because the number is symbolic to them. kobe has been that way since he started playing ball. awhile ago i read that in order to change your number you have to either switch teams or ask the nba office. obviously... the league let him do it so that they would get more money from fans buying the new jersey to replace the old #8. so yeah... symbolic for kobe, more money for the league.

He did it because it was his freshman number and ya because it said it was the start of the 2nd half of his career. This means (in my mind) that Kobe was done trying to be the dynamic one on one player he was at the start of his career, he no longer cared about getting the stats and is looking to become a role player who helps make players around him better. He also wanted it to symbolize the 2nd half of his career- the part WITHOUT shaq, because he wants to prove that he can win a title without him

A move signifying that he has a new beginning as the Lakers team leader...also clever marketing, as NBA merchandise is a huge market worth millions
