I always bring as little as possible. I hate to check bags (lost luggage sucks).
Leave room in your bags because you always come back with more than you left with.
Bring a book.
It is a good time to read.
Dress comfortably.
Have no metal in your belt, shoes, or clothes.
Get to the airport early, security can take a long time.
Bring gum to chew during take off and landing. My ears always pop with the pressure change.
Have fun :)

Good luck

listen to music, read a magazine something brainless. If it is an overnight flight take ear plugs. Be nice to the flight attendants they have to deal with crazy people everyday.
