Ok.. i have a compaq too...

this is what you do, first you gotta clean your disk, go to start, click on all programs, then click on accessories, then go to system tools, and then click on disk cleanup, and when that is done.. go to the same process again, and this time choose disk defragmentor, and there you go!..try to keep up with it, at the least once a month.

it does help your computer run smoother. It takes all the clutter of unused files out, and leaves more space.

Assuming you are using Windows, you can defrag your computer by clicking the Start Menu, then going to All Programs, Accessories, then System Tools. This could make your computer run faster, especially if you have not done it in a very long time. Defragging your computer takes all the files that have been split into fragments on your hard drive then puts everything together and condenses it, making information more readily accessible so your computer does not spend so much time and energy looking for it. FYI defragmenting your computer may take a while if you have never done it!

In some circumstances it will make your program open faster. For instance, if the drive is badly fragmented. Other factors which effect performance are the amount of RAM or system memory, the number of programs you have running and installed, and the speed of your processor. I would try defragmentation first. Assuming you are running XP here are the steps:
Go to start, all programs, accessories, and system tools. Defragment is listed under system tools. Go into Defragment analze your hard drive and if it says you should defrag then click on the defragment button it will do the rest. You should, under typical circumstances, defragment once a month to maintain your system. If your still experiencing problems my screen name on yahoo messenger is silverbullet763. Hope this helps!

You can open disk defrag by clicking accessories in the programs tab, select system tools, defrag. This may make your PC run faster. You might also have adware and spyware on your PC. Virus protection doesnt look for spyware. You also need to find some spyware removal tools. Dont ever kid yourself about virus protection either! There is no such thing as virus protection that will catch all viruses!

Isnt the defragmenter in Vista designed to defrag in the background at particular intervals. I also believe there is no way to view the status or progress. Personally, i have been using a third party tool for defragging my drives.
