LONG before awareness of the geographical zone, the expression "ring of fire" was applied to anyone or anything in a perilous position, with no escape. Johnny Cash the singer used it in reference to love. It derives from the mistaken belief that Scorpions, when surrounded by fire, will sting themselves to death (commit suicide) when realising that there is no escape. This belief was once widely held, and Johnny Cash would have known of it being more familiar with Scorpions, than Geography.

The Ring of Fire isn't where all volcanoes are located; It;s where usually they occure and also earthquakes. It runs throughhawaii, into California, then crossing into South America. It also crosses Japan, and other parts of Asia, as well as south of it.

It is a continental plate. It includes Hawaii, Washinton, California, Japan, and a few other places. It is called so because of the volcanic eruptions which often consist of flames erupting from the mouth of a volcano.
