Generally, it is safe to drink water from the house pipe, or tap. The water is already filtered and chlorinated (killing most of the bacteria ~99.9%) by the time it reaches your house. Health fanatics insist on using further filtering (Brita so on...) because the water from the house pipe contains certain minerals and ions that could be harmful to you in higher concentrations (like Pb, As ions...) but the water in our taps have been regulated so the concentrations are not high enough to hurt you. Further filtering may improve taste of water and remove absolute trace amounts of harmful ions, although your body could have done that itself.

The water that comes out of your tap has been tested to make sure it is not going to be harmful to your health. It should be perfectly safe to drink. If you have any doubts about the safety of your tap water, you should call your local water utility and have them come out to take samples.
