That's the type it appeals to. Whenever people come up with "reasons" why others are evil, that tells you something about the person's psyche.

Not all proddies are thin skinned. Just the Ted Haggard, religious right, fundamentalist, sexually repressed proddies.
Those of us in the mainline denominations, are grateful that the grace of God extends to every human being ... whether or not they are Christian, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, atheists, whatever. You've just been hanging around the wrong proddies ... care to talk it out over a pint, eh?

It's the real right wing fundamentalists that are the worst offenders. They're the worst because they're filled with fear and that the exact same reason they're fundamentalists! They want some very concrete rules to live by so they feel safe. People who don't agree with those rules scare the hell out them because they can't predict what will happen. This is why fundamentalists of every stripe are pretty scary people.
