I'm writing a paper and I don't know whether to use "toward" or towards." The sentence is:

...impacted how she described the character's feelings toward/towards his deceased parents.

Either may be correct, but "toward" is generally preferred in American English, "towards" in British English.

There is no difference between [toward] and [towards], and both are used by both British and American speakers.

"Towards" is hillbilly language, and so is "backwards." "Toward" is correct according to the Associated Press.
