Does Varitek even get a nod?

My top 5 Fantasy Catchers in 2007 (they might be pick higher than expected with a thin crop this year):

1) Joe Mauer, Minnesota - Arguably the "real" MVP of the Twins, Mauer may not develop the power that everyone expected him to possess, but his hitting stroke is one of the best in the league. Batting in front of MVP Justin Morneau and FA Torri Hunter has another shot of getting the AL batting title, something that no other Catcher has done back-to-back. Even his speed is a bonus for a Catcher.

2) Victor Martinez, Cleveland - The other prototype, he posses power in this league for a catcher, but not the stroke that Mauer possess. Still, with an up-and-coming offense that features Grady Sizemore and Travis Hafner, there's no reason that Martinez can reach 100 RBI.

3) Brain McCann, Atlanta - He was the heir apprentice to Johnny Estrada (who was traded to Arizona before the 2006 season) and never let that job go. He's projected to hit behind Chipper and Andruw Jones in the lineup; he another Catcher that can produce a Joe Mauer-type year.

4) Mike Piazza, Oakland - Now regulated to DH, Piazza can now concentrated on getting his power stroke back, something that Frank Thomas found back in 2006. Hope Fantasy manager can predict that lighting strikes twice.

5) Ramon Hernandez, Baltimore - An off year last year, Hernandez is trying to bounce back into an elite catcher once again and with an improving offense, expect Hernandez to get his 20 HR season again.

The rest...
6) Kenji Johjima, Seattle - Already play out one year, expect him to adjust to AL play once again.

7) Russell Martin, Dodgers - A Rookie of the Year candidate, could be the darkhorse catcher with an aging offense.

8) Michael Barrett, Cubs - With Derrek Lee healthy and with Aramis Ramirez/Alfonso Soriano in the lineup, expect Barrett to get his share of his 80 RBI's, maybe even more.

9) Jorge Posada, Yankees - Aging catcher could worry some, but a last resort who don't get the following catchers above can rely on a player who's playing on a loaded offense (and I mean loaded, 1-9 in the lineup).

10) Ivan Rodriguez, Detroit - Still one of the best, as World Series loss could motivate Rodriguez to carry this team to another title run.

I like all the people that are going into detail about defense and arm strength. This is about offense.

1. Joe Mauer
2. Brian McCann
3. Victor Martinez
4. Ivan Rodriguez
5. Jorge Posada

But really, there's such a huge difference between the top 3 and the bottom 2...I would say don't kill yourself to get anyone not in the top 3. And no, Varitek doesn't get a nod in the top 5, but I think he could definitely have a better year than last year.

My top 5 fantasy catchers are:

1. Joe Mauer- Incredible average, decent power, plays almost every day, is young and will continue to improve. Plus he even steals bases!

2. Victor Martinez- Great average, good power, plays every day and is a consistently good hitter.

3. Brian McCann- He has great average and power and is young. I am ranking him below Martinez because he only has one amazing season behind him and I am not as confident he will perform as well this year.

4. Kenji Johimja- Decent average and power. Is 30, even though last year was his 1st in MLB. I consider him to be a significant downgrade from the top 3.

5. Jorge Posada- Should have a middle of the road average and good power. He is 35, but since he plays on the Yankees he will get a lot of RBI opportunities. He had 93 last year.

Sorry, Jason Varitek did not make my top 5 (especially since he had knee surgery in August).

1. Victor Martinez--Hits for Avg., & drives in runs
2. Joe Mauer--Al Batting Champ. The question is, can he keep it up!
3. Brian McCann--Premier hitter. Expected to have even better season.
4. Ivan Rodriguez--Can still drive in runs. Has Sheffield in lineup now!
5. Ramon Hernandez --Strong arm, hits with power.
6. Kenji Jojihma
7. Paul Lo Duca--Bats 2nd between Reyes & Beltran. Who wouldn't like that!
8. Michael Barrett
9. Mike Piazza
10.Jason Varitek
11.A.J. Pierzynski

Sad thing here is, I'm a Red Sox fan. I bleed Red, but Varitek is just getting old. I think the world of him being such a great captain for the team, I just wonder how much he's got left in the tank!

I don't think Varitek is going to do very good next year. He's turning old and every year he's getting worse and worse.

My top 5 fantasy MLB catchers would be
1)Joe Mauer
2)Brian McCann
3)Victor Martinez
4)Paul LoDuca
5)Jorge Posada

Mauer is definately the best. I would have victor martinez behind him. McCann 3rd. Jorge Posada, Kenji Johjima and Ivan rodriguez battle it out for the final two spots

1. Joe Mauer
2. Victor Martinez
3. Pudge, he needs to be here because of his defense
4. Brian McCann
5. I think A.J. Pierzynski deserves a look. His defense is decent, but he's batted over .300 the past two seasons.
