Because being gay isn't an addiction, choice or affliction. It's just a person's sexuality. Just like I'm assuming yours is straight. Wouldn't you think it was silly if someone asked if you could stop being straight. You'd probably say, of course I couldn't stop. Neither can they.

I don't know. If Ted Haggert can all of a sudden stop being gay and a drug addict, why can't everybody else?
Oh that's right, drinking, drugs, gambling and sex addictions are things that you learn to do, and being a homosexual is something that you are born with and can't stop doing just like you can't stop breathing because the air is foul.
Haggert is as fake as Falwell or Baker. They are all liers and con-men and want nothing more than to take money from people that need something to believe in. You can't all of a sudden become straight. Even a reformed alcoholic is still an alcoholic. Haggert is just telling people what they want to hear so he can go back to making millions of dollars.

Let's get one thing straight- all those things you list are actions. From what I've heard from various ______ Anonymous groups, even those who finally win and break free of their drinking, drug habit, gambling, and sex addiction, all still have the desire to do it, particularly for things that aren't bad in moderation, like drinking or gambling. Just because they stop doesn't mean that at heart they aren't drinkers or gamblers, you know?
So a homosexual can certainly stop acting on his desires, just like alcoholics can stop acting on their desire to drink. But if the desire is there, he's still gay, and always will be.
From what I've heard, there are no or few ways to consciously change one's sexual orientation and desires- most who say they have are either lying or find themselves falling into 'relapses', so to speak. So take that into consideration.
Not to mention that you're putting homosexuality in a category full of unhealthy, unsafe activities, when it is nothing but a morally neutral, perfectly normal and healthy sexual orientation.
Hope that makes sense.

It's simple and easy to stop having gay sex. No one's denying that. The actual orientation, though, is a lot deeper than the behavior. It is impossible to stop being gay just the same way it is impossible for you to suddenly find yourself incredibly attracted to the same sex. Even the "ex-gay" programs, if you look closer at what they claim, admit that the "impulses" never go away. That's because you are literally fighting nature.

The difference is that being homosexual is not an addiction. There is no reason to "stop" being one.

being homosexual is not an addiction, bad habit or a disease, that's why. why do people keep asking such a ridiculous, insulting question? I can't "stop" being a lesbian any more than I can stop being blue-eyed, or white, or tall. it's genetic....it's how we were born. can you stop being straight? no, of course not. but, with education and an open mind, you can stop being ignorant.

I'm guessing that you're looking at it as something these people
can control. I believe they are born the way they are. They can't change that any more than a heterosexual person can decide to be gay. I don't think they wake up one morning and say "Hey, I think I'll decide to become gay today!" You can believe what you want, but this is what I think about it.

It's all about self control. All my life, I have lived a lesbian life until recently, I decided to start dating men. I'm attracted to men, but not on the same levels and aspects as I am with women. However, I still feel I can share a close friendship with a man and be happy with marriage. Anyone can do it. Anyone can change if they want to change. You can't control how you feel, but you can control your actions...

Because it's not some sort of random addiction. Just like some people who are straight can't turn gay. Gay people can't turn straight. It's everyday reality for them.
